The study of Ahadith al-Ahkam (Prophetic traditions on legal rulings) and their commentaries has long been central to Islamic scholarship. Among the most significant works are Imam al-Hafiz al-‘Iraqi and his Taqrib al-Asanid wa Tartib al-Masanid (Taqrib, an abridgment of hadith chains) along with its commentary Tarh al-Tathrib (detailed explanation of the abridgment), completed by his son Abu Zur‘ah. The commentary is notable for its thorough analysis of hadith texts, careful derivation of legal rulings, and balanced evaluation of juristic opinions.
This study examines al-‘Iraqi’s methodology, focusing on the Maqasid al-Sharia (higher objectives of Islamic law) dimension of his interpretation. It highlights how he clarified the purposes and wisdoms of rulings, countered literalist readings, and applied legal principles to practical cases.
The significance of the research lies in its focus on a foundational work of Ahadith al-Ahkam and its demonstration of the value of Maqasid-oriented reasoning. It provides scholars of Islamic law with methodological guidance for engaging with classical texts while preserving both legal detail and overarching objectives. The study concludes that al-‘Iraqi exemplifies an approach that integrates textual precision with Maqasid insight, underscoring its relevance for contemporary interpretation of Islamic law.
